In May 1949, Barns-Graham travelled to Grindelwald Glacier in Switzerland with the Brotherton family. Initially planned as a holiday and as respite from her work as an artist in St Ives, her encounter with the Glacier led to an outpouring of work, with the next three years of paintings and drawings dedicated to the theme. Later in her career, Barns-Graham returned to the Glacier theme on several occasions perhaps inspired by discovering a work or photograph from the 1950s series in the studio or when other themes eluded her.
