In 1954, Barns-Graham first travelled to Italy with her husband, David Lewis, visiting Tuscany and Venice. She received a travel scholarship for the following year, spending January to June 1955 exploring Milan, Rome, Tuscany, Sicily, Campagna and Calabria. It was the quarried and cut landscapes of 'Clay Country' that particularly captured Barns-Graham's imagination.
